Karuma Large Ceramic Mug - Blue & White - Set of 2

A pair of cylindrical mugs in white clay, 10cm tall and 8cm across, each holding 375ml. Fine blue lines run down from the rim in a close band and stop partway down in a ragged, uneven edge, leaving the clay below it plain cream. The lines are cut into the clay before they are painted, so each one sits in its own shallow groove and catches the light along its length. The handle is a plain round loop and is left unpainted.

Two mugs come in a set, and at 375ml each they hold a full mug of tea or coffee rather than a small cup. They are dishwasher safe, so they belong on the everyday shelf rather than the one kept for best, and the same blue and white runs across the rest of the Karuma range, which holds plates, bowls, jugs and a dinnerware set.

The mugs are white clay under a glaze. Each one is shaped and painted by hand in north Vietnam using long established methods, the lines etched into the clay while it is still soft and the blue laid into them afterwards. Because the etching and the painting are both done by hand, the spacing of the lines and the point where they stop vary between the two mugs in a set. The Karuma range also runs to a smaller mug.
