Description

Kanja is a pair of iron Christmas decorations in the shape of snowflakes, gold with a lacquer finish and made in two sizes so they read as a family rather than a matched pair. The larger measures 37cm by 37cm and has six branching arms tipped with small round knobs, built up in layered outlines around a solid centre. The smaller, at 24cm by 24cm, is lighter on the eye: outlined diamond arms alternate with beaded spokes around an open triangle at its heart. Both have a slightly mottled surface, so the gold catches the light unevenly rather than looking flat.

These are generous sizes for Christmas decorations, closer to window and wall pieces than tree baubles. Hung in a window, either one shows its full outline against the daylight; against a dark curtain or a painted wall, the gold stands out clearly. Each hangs from a twisted cord with a loop at the top, so a curtain pole, a window catch, a hook on the front door or a nail by the mantelpiece will all do. Hang them at different heights in the same window, or split them between the hallway and the living room if you would rather spread the gold through the house.

Both are 100% iron with a lacquer finish. Lacquer seals the surface of metal and gives the gold its sheen, and like any iron piece they are happiest kept somewhere dry. The listed weight is 0.38KG. Being flat, they store easily between seasons: lay them in a box with tissue between them so the arms do not catch on each other.
