Description

Our Kalia Advent candle holder is a single piece of stoneware shaped as four round cups joined in a row. Each cup has a raised socket at its centre that holds a dinner candle upright. It is 30cm long, 8cm wide and 4cm tall, so it sits low and leaves the candles to do the talking, and it weighs 0.64KG. The brown reactive glaze pools and runs across every cup, deeper at the rims and lighter where it thins over the curves, which gives the stoneware a lively, layered surface.

Four cups make it a natural Advent candle holder: by tradition a further candle is lit on each Sunday of Advent, so the row grows brighter as Christmas gets closer. At 8cm wide it fits along a narrow sideboard, a chest of drawers or the middle of the dining table without taking over the space. Its 30cm length leaves room around it for greenery, baubles or a few wrapped presents. It suits anyone who likes a quieter, natural-looking Christmas. Once the season is over it works just as well through the winter evenings as a low holder for four dinner candles on a mantelpiece or side table.

It is made from 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired ceramic that feels sturdy and solid, and it is finished in a reactive glaze. Reactive glazes move and change in the kiln, so the flow of colour on each piece is its own and yours will differ a little from the next. The glaze covers the cups inside and out, and a small foot under each cup lifts the holder slightly off the surface. To style it, mix candle colours that pick up the brown in the glaze, such as caramel and soft mauve, or keep to plain ivory candles for a calmer look. The candles and styling props shown are not included.
