Our Kali bowl is a small blue stoneware dish with a bird rising from its centre. The bowl is shallow, with a scalloped rim that opens like the petals of a flower, and the bird stands on a short pedestal in the middle, its crested head turned and its fanned tail lifted. The whole piece measures 9.5cm across and 9.5cm tall, so it sits easily in the palm of a hand, and it weighs just 0.11KG. A glossy glaze covers the bowl and the bird, pooling deeper in the hollows and running paler over the raised feathers and the petal rim, so the blue never looks flat.

At this size it is a ring dish more than a serving bowl. Rings, earrings and a fine chain gather in the petal-shaped hollow around the bird, which gives them a place to stay together at the end of the day.
