Description

The Kalai is a small ceramic vase, 16cm tall and 15.5cm across, hand shaped so that no two carry quite the same form. Deep grooves run up from the base and fan out over the belly of the vase, narrowing and widening as they go and ending at a rim that waves rather than sitting level. The glaze is a speckled oatmeal cream that reacts in the kiln, gathering darker in the grooves and drying paler along the ridges between them.

It is a decorative vase and it does not hold water, so it takes dried flowers or stands on its own. At 16cm it is the smaller of two sizes and it sits low enough on a coffee table to see across; the larger is made in the same form. It is made for indoor use.

The vase is ceramic and hand shaped, and the grooved surface is finished with a glaze that reacts in the kiln. That reaction is what makes the speckling, and it comes out differently every firing, so the tone and the way the glaze pools in the grooves belong to the one vase.
