Description

A hand shaped ceramic vase 32cm tall, 25cm across and flattened front to back. The outline is a lozenge: it rises from a small flat foot, widens to a sharp corner on each side at about the middle, then draws back in to a neck that is left uneven, dipping low on one side and standing higher on the other. The surface is cut into close vertical grooves that fan with the shape, and the glaze is a speckled oatmeal, paler along the ridges and browner in the grooves, with dark flecks through it.

It is for dry display. The Kalai vases are not water tight and are for decorative use only, so it takes dried flowers, grasses or seed heads, or stands empty. At 32cm it is tall enough to hold a side table or a mantelpiece on its own, and light coming from one side gives every groove its own line of shadow.

The vase is ceramic, hand shaped in Portugal. The glaze reacts in the kiln, so the speckling and the depth of colour in the grooves come out differently on every piece. The Kalai range runs to two sizes, this one and a smaller vase of the same shape.
