Description

The Kabani is a low mango wood jewellery box, 25.5cm wide and 7.5cm tall, with a hinged lid glazed with a clear glass panel so the contents show without it being opened. Inside, a fitted wooden grid divides the base into six compartments, three across and two deep. Two small dark hinges sit at the back edge of the lid, and the box stands flat on its base with no feet.

At 25.5 by 17.8cm the footprint is about that of a paperback laid flat, which puts it on a dressing table, the top of a chest of drawers or a shelf beside a mirror. The whole box is only 7.5cm tall, so the compartments are shallow ones: rings, studs, a coiled chain and a short stack of bangles lie flat in them. Because the lid is glass, what is in the box reads from standing height without lifting it.

The box is mango wood and the lid panel is glass. Mango trees are grown first for their fruit and are cut for timber only once they have stopped bearing, so the wood is a by-product of the fruit harvest and selling it gives the farmers a second income from the same trees.

Frequently Asked

How many compartments does it have?

Six, in a grid three across and two deep.

25.5cm wide, 17.8cm front to back and 7.5cm tall.

What is the wood?

Mango wood, from trees grown for their fruit and felled only once they have stopped bearing it.

How do I look after it?

Wipe it regularly with a soft, dry cloth, and keep harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners away from it. The colour of the mango wood will change over time.
