Description

A serving bowl 30cm across and 14cm deep, the sides running out from a small flat foot to a wide rim in a straight cone rather than a curve. The clay is cream, and rows of dark green drops are painted over the top third of the outside, carried across the rim and on down the inside. Each drop is round at the head and tapers to a point below it, and the rows are staggered so the whole band reads as a scatter rather than a grid.

A cone keeps the bowl shallow at the edge and deep only at the centre, which suits leaves, pasta and anything served in a single mound better than it suits soup. At 1.14kg and 30cm across it sits in the middle of a table rather than being passed round it, and the pattern is on the inside as well, so it still reads when the bowl is full. It is food safe.

The body is ceramic and the drops are brushed on by hand in Vietnam, so the spacing and the length of them differ from one bowl to the next. The Juniper Drop range runs to dinner and side plates, cereal and pasta bowls, mugs, jugs, a teapot, a butter dish and a cup and saucer, and this serving bowl is made in a medium as well.
