Description
This birthday decoration is a painted, multicoloured train: an engine and four wagons, joined by small hooks and eyes and running on unpainted wheels that show their grain. A cat in a striped jumper rides on the engine, and each wagon carries an animal beside a wrapped parcel: a mouse, a rabbit, a dog in stripes and a bear in a party hat, with the parcels tied in ribbon or dotted with spots. Three of the parcels take a candle and the rabbit's parcel holds a number, so the train marks which birthday it is. Coupled together it is 38cm long, 5cm wide and 11cm tall, and it weighs 0.31KG.
It is made for the birthday table, laid in a line in front of the birthday child's place, with the candles lit and the right number standing on the rabbit's wagon. At 5cm wide it fits a narrow strip of table between place settings, and at 11cm tall it stays low on the table. After the party, remove the candles and it stays on as a decoration in a child's room, along a bookshelf, a windowsill or a chest of drawers. It suits families who like to bring the same pieces out every year, and it makes a thoughtful present for a godchild or grandchild.
It is made from MDF, beech and aluminium. Beech is a close-grained hardwood that stands up well to handling, and MDF takes paint evenly, which suits painted detail such as the faces, stripes and spots on each animal. Every wagon is a separate piece, so the train comes apart at the hooks and tucks into a drawer or box between birthdays, ready to couple again the next year. On the table, point the engine towards the birthday child so the cat leads the way; on a shelf, leave the last number in place as a reminder of the year.

Frequently Asked
What materials make up the train?
It is made from MDF, beech and aluminium. The wheels are left unpainted so their grain shows, while the engine, wagons, animals and parcels are painted.
How big is it?
Coupled together, the train is 38cm long, 5cm wide and 11cm tall, and it weighs 0.31KG, so it sits easily along a table or a shelf.
How many candles does it hold?
Three. The spotted parcels on the mouse's and the dog's wagons and the ribboned parcel on the bear's wagon each take one candle.
Can the number be changed?
Yes. The number stands in the ribboned parcel on the rabbit's wagon and can be swapped, so the train can mark a different birthday each year.
Can it stay out after the birthday?
Yes. Remove the candles and the engine and wagons make a cheerful decoration for a child's room, along a shelf, a windowsill or a chest of drawers, all year.
Do the wagons come apart?
Yes. Each wagon couples to the next with a small hook and eye, so the train can be separated for storage or laid out in a shorter line.
