Description

This is a set of four cream stoneware plates made for the Christmas table, each one 16cm across and 2cm tall. At that size they are side plates rather than dinner plates, just right for a mince pie, a slice of Christmas cake or a couple of biscuits. Across the centre of every plate the words 'Have a Holly Jolly Christmas' are embossed across the surface, with a small painted heart beneath them and a hand-painted sprig of pine and berries reaching in from the rim. The lettering is embossed in the same tone as the plate, so it reads quietly beside the painted sprig and only shows itself properly up close.

They earn their place through the whole of December, from the first mince pies to Boxing Day. Put them out with tea when friends call round, lay one at each place for Christmas pudding, or use them for toast and jam on Christmas morning. Four plates suit a small household or a table for four. The maker lists them for food use, so they are proper side plates for the season rather than decoration alone, and one plate with a few homemade biscuits on it makes a kind gift for a host.

Each plate is 100% stoneware with a hand-painted finish. Stoneware is a dense, hard-wearing ceramic that copes well with regular use, and the care here is easy: the plates are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and oven safe, so you can warm mince pies on them in the oven and wash them in the dishwasher afterwards.
