Description

The Jiji is woven from raffia over a wire frame, and it is oval rather than round: 30.5cm across one way and 18.5cm the other, standing 25.5cm tall. Flattened ribbons of raffia are wound horizontally across upright wires set a few centimetres apart, so the surface is a loose crosshatch with small gaps between every pass and the vertical wires showing through as regular lines. The raffia is pale straw and the ribbons vary in width, which keeps the rows irregular.

An open weave this loose does not soften light, it breaks it: lit, the bulb shows clearly through the gaps and the shade throws a dappled pattern up the wall behind it. Because the shade is oval it does that unevenly, casting more light off the two narrow ends than the broad faces, which is why it suits a lamp standing against a wall rather than one in the middle of a table. It is made for table and floor lamps rather than ceiling use. It weighs 0.35kg.

Raffia comes from the leaves of a palm, stripped into long flexible fibres and woven by hand around the frame, so the width of the ribbons and the spacing of the rows differ on every shade. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
