Description

This is a pleated bamboo fan made for the wall, and at 150cm across and 110cm tall it is a large piece of wall art that fills a wide wall on its own. Fine bamboo strips are folded into tight pleats that fan out from a small ring at the centre, opening into a broad, almost full circle with a wedge-shaped gap at the base. A long tassel hangs from that centre ring, and a string loop at the top is there for hanging. The colour is natural, the soft tone of the bamboo itself, so the interest comes from the pleats catching light and shadow rather than from any pattern.

Because it is so wide, it works best where there is a generous wall: above a sofa, behind an armchair or over a low sideboard, with the furniture sitting beneath its lower edge and the fan rising above it. It suits a calm living room of soft upholstery and wood, and it holds its own against exposed brick, its fine ridges softening a hard surface. It does the work of several pictures in a single hang, and it is a good answer for a long, bare wall where smaller prints can look lost.

The fan is 90% bamboo, with 7% polyester, 1.5% wood, 1% cotton and 0.5% paper making up the rest. Bamboo is a light, springy material, and at 1KG the whole piece is easy to lift into place, hanging from the string loop at the top on a single hook. At the outer edge the ends of the strips are left slightly uneven, which gives the fan a soft, natural outline. For the best balance, hang it so the tassel ends a hand's width above the back of a sofa or chair, and give it clear wall on either side; the styling props shown are not included.
