Description

A serving board cut from mango wood, 27cm long, 16cm across and 2cm thick, with an outline that is nowhere straight: the blade is close to round and the edge waves in and out of it. A short handle runs off one end with a hole bored through it, and a tan leather thong is knotted through the hole. The face is smooth and the grain sweeps across it in wide arcs.

Twenty-seven by sixteen is a board for one round rather than for a table: breads and cheeses, dips and crudites, or a grazing board for one person. It carries by the handle and hangs from the leather thong when it is not in use, which is what the bored hole is for. The two sizes work together, the small one carrying fruit beside the 40cm board.

The wood is assembled in panels with the grain of each piece set against the next, which is what gives the face its pattern. Mango is a by-product of mango farming: the trees are grown for fruit and harvested for years, and only once they stop bearing are they cut, which lets the farmer plant again. The board is food safe.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

27cm long, 16cm across and 2cm thick.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

Can it be hung up?

Yes. The handle is bored through and carries a leather thong.

Is there a larger size?

Yes, at 40cm long and the same 16cm across.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface will nourish and protect the wood, though it will darken the tone. The colour may change over time, which is the wood rather than a fault.
