Description

A serving board cut from mango wood, 40cm long, 16cm across and 2cm thick. The blade is a long rounded oblong with an edge that waves in and out rather than running true, and a handle carries off one end with a hole bored through it and a tan leather thong knotted through the hole. The face is smooth and the grain runs the length of the board in wide bands.

Forty by sixteen is a board for a table rather than for one person: a cheeseboard for several, breads and dips laid out in a line, or a grazing board passed along. It carries by the handle and hangs from the thong when it is not in use. The two sizes lie out together, this 40cm board beside the 27cm one.

The board is built up in panels, with the grain of one piece set against the next so the pattern changes across the face. The timber is a by-product of mango farming: the trees are planted for fruit and cropped for years, and only when they stop bearing are they felled, which frees the ground for new planting and gives the farmer a second income from the wood. The board is food safe.
