Description

A mango wood bowl 23cm across and 13cm deep, turned from a blank that is built up first from separate pieces of solid timber. The joins run round the outside as fine lines and the grain changes direction at each one, so a single face carries pale honey next to grey and olive. The base draws in to a small flat foot and the sides rise almost straight to a squared rim.

Twenty-three centimetres across and 13cm deep is a bowl for one dish rather than for a table: fruit on a worktop, bread or nuts set out beside a board, or a salad served rather than tossed. At 0.59kg it is light in the hand for its size. It sits inside the 33cm Indus, so the two stack.

The mango is FSC certified and comes from trees that have finished fruiting: they are planted for the crop, worked for years, and cut only at the end of it, which frees the ground for new planting. Nothing is applied over the surface. The bowl is food safe.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

23cm across and 13cm deep.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

Is there a larger size?

Yes, at 33cm across and 17cm deep.

Why does the colour change across one bowl?

Each bowl is built up from separate pieces of mango wood before it is turned, so the grain and the tone shift at every join.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface will nourish and protect the wood, though it will darken the tone. The colour may change over time, which is the wood rather than a fault.
