Description

A bowl turned from mango wood, 33cm across and 17cm deep, with a rounded base drawn in to a small flat foot and sides that rise almost straight to a squared rim. The bowl is built up from solid pieces of mango wood before it is turned, and the joins show as lines running round it. The grain changes direction across every join, so pale honey, grey and olive streaks sit side by side on one face.

Seventeen centimetres deep against 33cm across gives a capacity of 7 litres, so it holds a salad that can be turned over inside it without going over the rim, or a whole bowl of fruit standing on a counter. At 1.32kg it lifts full and carries to a table. Indus also runs at 23cm across and 13cm deep, and the two sit one inside the other.

The wood is mango, grown first for its fruit and cut for timber only once the trees have stopped bearing, and the timber is FSC certified. Because every bowl is made up from separate pieces, the run of the colour differs from one to the next. The surface is left natural, with nothing applied over it, and the bowl is food safe.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

33cm across and 17cm deep, and it holds 7 litres.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

Is there a smaller size?

Yes, at 23cm across and 13cm deep.

Why does the colour change across one bowl?

Each bowl is built up from separate pieces of mango wood before it is turned, so the grain and the tone shift at every join.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away rather than leaving it to soak. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface will nourish and protect the wood, though it will darken the tone. The colour may change over time, which is the wood rather than a fault.
