Description

Indra is a pair of woven storage baskets in natural water hyacinth and seagrass, sold together as a set of two in different sizes. Broad plaited bands alternate with narrower twisted rows all the way up the sides, which gives each basket a ribbed, textured surface that catches the light. The smaller basket is 39cm long, 31cm wide and 29cm tall, and the larger is 43cm long, 35cm wide and 31cm tall. Both have a softly rounded oval outline, and a handhold is cut just below the rim at each end for lifting.

At those sizes they suit the everyday clutter that needs a home rather than a cupboard. In a living room, the larger basket takes a folded throw or a few cushions beside the sofa, while the smaller one keeps magazines, remote controls and chargers together on a shelf. In a bedroom or nursery they work for spare blankets, soft toys and building bricks, and in a hallway for scarves, gloves and dog leads. They also suit a bathroom floor for rolled towels and spare toilet rolls. The handholds make it easy to carry a basket from room to room when tidying.

The materials are water hyacinth, seagrass and metal, and the set weighs 2.3KG. Water hyacinth and seagrass are both plant fibres, and natural fibre varies a little in tone and texture from strand to strand, so the surface looks lively rather than uniform. The plaited bands give the sides body, and the twisted rows between them add a finer line, which keeps the pattern interesting at close range. For a calm, layered look, stand the pair together at the foot of a bed or beside a fireplace, or place them apart, one next to the sofa and the other by the front door. The natural colour sits easily with pale wood, linen and white walls.
