Description

A set of two small mugs, each 6.5cm tall and 8cm across, holding 200ml. The shape is squat and straight-sided, wider than it is tall, with a small round handle set high on the side. Rows of indigo drops are painted around the mug from the lip downward, staggered so each row falls between the two above it, thinning out and stopping about halfway down. Below that the off-white glaze is left plain.

These are coffee mugs, and at 200ml they hold a small cup rather than a long one. The body is wider than it is tall, so the mug sits low and broad on a table and the pattern stays in view from above as well as from the side. The indigo reads almost black in the deepest drops and lighter where the brush ran dry.

The body is white clay, the drops are a water-based paint and the mug is glazed. Each one is painted by hand in Vietnam, so the rows differ in spacing and the colour shifts from deep indigo to a washed blue within a single row. The Indigo Drop range makes up a full table setting: dinner plate, side plate, cereal bowl, pasta bowl, serving bowl, jug, teapot, cup and saucer, butter dish, spoon rest, egg cups, garlic grater and a twelve-piece dinner set.
