Description

The Indali is a round dining table in mango wood, 150cm across and 76cm high. The top is a thick slab of boards joined edge to edge with a bevel run around the rim, and the saw marks are left showing across the face rather than worked flat. It stands on three square-section legs that splay outward, tied near the floor by three straight stretchers that meet in a Y at the centre.

A full 150cm circle wants floor on every side rather than a wall to sit against, because chairs draw out all round it. There is approximately 73cm from the floor to the underside of the top, which is the figure to measure a chair against. The three legs sit well in from the rim, so a chair can go anywhere around the edge without a leg between somebody and the table. At 60.8kg it takes two people to move.

The table is mango wood throughout. Mango is grown for its fruit first and cut for timber only once the trees stop bearing, which is what puts the wood into furniture at all and returns something further to the growers from the same land. Because the top is boards laid edge to edge, the grain, the tone and the run of the saw marks change from board to board and from table to table. The same round table is made smaller, at 120cm across.
