Description
Two small ceramic mugs, off-white with an indigo pattern running around the upper body: fine vertical strokes dropped down from below the lip, each one finishing in a small rounded point. A plain band is left above them at the rim and another below them at the foot. The mugs are squat and straight-sided with a small looped handle, 8cm across and 6.5cm from base to rim, and each holds 200ml.
This is the smaller of the two Iba mugs, made for a short coffee, where the larger takes a longer coffee or a tea. Two come in a set. In daylight the indigo reads hard and bright against the off-white rather than sinking into it. The Iba also sits alongside the Indigo Drop range, which carries a different pattern in a similar tone.
The mugs are ceramic and are made by hand in Vietnam, where the glaze is applied by hand, so the colour and the patterning come out slightly differently on every piece. The shape and the clay were both changed when the Iba was redrawn, which gave the range a lighter body. The Iba runs to a dinner plate, side plate, pasta bowl, cereal bowl, serving bowl, jug, butter dish, a twelve-piece dinner set, and this mug in two sizes.
