Description

A pair of mugs in cream ceramic, each 7cm high and 10cm across, holding 370ml. The body is a straight-sided cylinder with a small looped handle, and the pattern is put on by hand: a band of close vertical lines running down from below the rim, every one of them ending in a small teardrop. The lines shift from a pale wash to a deep indigo along the same mug, and the bottom third of the body is left plain cream.

At 370ml this is the larger of the two Iba mug sizes; the smaller one is made for a short barista-style coffee. The mug is wider than it is tall, so it sits low and steady on a table rather than standing up off it. The handle is small and loops close to the body, taking two or three fingers rather than a whole hand. Two come in a set.

The ceramic is made by hand and the glaze is put on by hand as well, which is where the colour and the irregular patterning come from, so no two mugs in a set carry the same lines. The Iba design runs through a wider set of pieces in the same indigo, among them plates, bowls, a butter dish and a jug.
