Description

A wide, round bellied vase in earthenware, 38cm across and 30.5cm tall, drawn in at the top to a short neck with a 7cm opening. Two small looped handles sit either side of that neck. The glaze is ochre and reactive: it runs glossy amber across the shoulder, breaks into darker brown streaks down one side and lightens again towards the foot, so the colour is layered rather than laid on evenly.

The opening is only 7cm across, which holds a few stems upright without needing anything to support them, and at 2.807kg empty the vase is heavy enough at the base that tall dried stems or branches will not tip it. At 38cm wide it takes up most of the depth of a console table or a deep shelf, and it holds dried seed heads. Dried stems, foliage and branches are what the narrow neck suits rather than a cut bunch.

The clay is Portuguese earthenware, and the horizontal rings left by the making are allowed to show through the glaze rather than being turned away. Each vase is glazed by hand, and because the glaze reacts in the heat of the kiln the tone, the depth of the amber and the run of the darker streaks differ from one vase to the next. No two come out of the kiln alike.
