Description
This is a round side table with two levels: a wooden top with a shallow raised rim, and a coiled rattan basket held below it between four iron legs. The top is suar wood, a hardwood known for its broad, swirling grain, and in the natural finish the grain does the decorating. At 45cm across and 60cm tall, it is a compact side table, sized to sit beside a sofa or armchair without taking over the floor.
In a living room it gives you somewhere for a lamp, a stack of books or a potted plant, with the basket underneath taking the things that usually end up on the floor: magazines, paperbacks and remote controls. It works just as well as a bedside table in a guest room or a small bedroom, and in a reading nook it keeps everything within reach of the chair. It takes a maximum load of 20KG, so it is made for everyday things such as a lamp and a pile of books rather than anything heavy.
The frame is iron, holding the top and the basket together, and the basket is rattan coiled round in tight rings. Rattan is a palm cane that is light and flexible, and as natural materials the wood and cane will each vary a little in grain and tone from one table to the next. Care is simple: wipe it clean with a moist cloth. The table weighs 5.2KG, light enough to move from room to room, and the maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. For styling, let the wood and rattan sit alongside linen, wool and other warm textures, and keep the top fairly clear so the grain shows.
