Description

Hiro is a stoneware candle holder made in the shape of a fish, sitting upright on its belly with its tail curled up behind it and its mouth open to take a candle. Every scale is picked out in relief, with a raised eye, a fin at the side and a fanned tail marked with fine lines. It is 11.5cm long, 4.5cm wide and 9cm tall, a small piece, and at 0.14KG it is light enough to move from shelf to table. The grey glaze is speckled and textured, and it gathers in the hollows between the scales so the pattern reads clearly from across the room.

The open mouth holds a single dinner candle, which turns the fish into a small, cheerful light for a dining table, a mantelpiece or a bedside shelf. Because it is only 4.5cm wide, it suits narrow spots where a broader holder would not fit: a windowsill, the ledge of a bookcase, the end of a desk. It also works without a candle, as an ornament among books, boxes and baskets on an open shelf or in a glass cabinet.
