Description

A console table, 80cm tall, in wood. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 160cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. A console is a shallow table for a place with no room for a deep one — a hallway, behind a sofa, along a landing. Depth is what makes it possible.

Pine is a softwood, so it marks more readily than oak or beech — and takes a paint or a wash far better, because the grain drinks it in. Marks in pine read as age rather than damage. Supplied as a set of 1. 1 shelves.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. Depth is the whole decision: anything over 40cm starts to obstruct a hallway, and anything under 25cm will not hold a lamp and a bowl side by side. It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
