Description

A marble coffee table, 44cm tall, in white. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 81cm it is about as wide as a standard interior door. A coffee table sets the centre of a seating group. Too small and the room feels unresolved; too large and there is nowhere to walk.

Cool tones settle beside grey, blue and black without any effort. Against a warm timber they need something to mediate, or the two simply sit next to each other. Iron is the traditional choice for a reason: it takes heat, weight and time without complaint. It will mark if it is left wet, so indoors or under cover is where it belongs. Marble is quarried, not manufactured, so the veining on the piece that arrives will not be the veining in the photograph. That is the material behaving correctly. It also explains the weight, and the weight is what keeps the base where you put it.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses.

Leave 40cm between the table and the sofa — enough to walk past, close enough to reach a cup without standing.

It needs nothing beyond dusting, and a damp cloth on the finish rather than anything solvent.
