Description

The Harrison basket is a beige storage basket in woven bankuan grass and iron, with a lion's head on one end. The face is a round, domed piece of weave with eyes, a nose and a muzzle, framed by a shaggy fringed mane. Behind the head the basket stretches like a body, a roomy rectangular shape 32cm long, 52cm wide and 36cm tall, with an open top. It is big enough to swallow a good armful of a child's things, yet it reads as a friendly character in the room rather than one more box.

It belongs in a child's bedroom, nursery or playroom, where it gathers soft toys, picture books and blankets at the end of the day. With no lid to remove, everything drops straight into the basket, and tidying up becomes a game of feeding the lion. Because the head sits on the short end, the basket can stand with the lion looking out into the room while its body tucks along a bookcase or the side of a bed, leaving the middle of the floor clear. It suits a living room too, for spare throws and cushions, or a hallway for hats and scarves.

Bankuan grass is a natural fibre, so the tone and texture of the weave vary a little from one basket to the next, and the mane is a soft, loose fringe that gives the lion its character. At 1.2KG the basket is light to lift and easy to carry from room to room. As with any woven grass, it is happiest kept dry and away from damp.
