Description

Our Hani Christmas star is woven from 100% bamboo into eight points, and it measures 33cm across and 5cm wide. At the centre the flat strips cross in a close chevron weave. Towards the tips they open into a looser lattice, and each point is shaped from woven strips folded round on themselves, which gives the star real form rather than the flat outline of a paper cut-out. It is beige all over and weighs just 0.125KG. That light weight and slim 5cm width mean it needs very little to hold it up.

It hangs well at the top of a window, where daylight shows through the open weave of the points. It is just as at home on a bare wall, on a bedroom wall, on the inside of a door or hung from a curtain pole or the edge of a shelf. At 33cm across it is large enough to hold its own on a wide pane or a hall wall, yet slim enough to sit close to the glass. It suits a pared-back Christmas of plain wood, linen and greenery, and anyone who would rather decorate with natural materials than with glitter and plastic. Because it does not shout Christmas, it can stay up through the winter after the tree comes down.

It is made entirely of bamboo, and the construction is plain to see: flat strips plaited across the centre and carried out into each point. The maker gives no care instructions. Bamboo is a natural material that is happiest kept dry, so a soft, dry brush is the gentlest way to lift dust from the weave. For styling, hang two or three at different heights in one window, or pair a single star with a sprig of fir and a few pine cones on the sill below. The styling props shown are not included.
