Description
This hand painted stag trinket box is a little standing figure with a secret: lift the top half and it opens to hold small treasures. Made from metal alloy, the stag stands on four slender legs with black hooves, his head turned to one side beneath a full spread of antlers. His coat is painted in warm tan and brown, with fine strokes that pick out the texture of fur from his pale chest to the darker markings on his legs, and his face has a white muzzle, a black nose and dark-edged ears. A gold-coloured rim runs around his middle where the two halves meet. He stands 13cm tall, 9cm across and 4cm deep, compact enough for the narrowest shelf.
Because he is freestanding, he needs no hook or nail: set him on a dressing table, a bedside table, a bookcase or a mantelpiece and he settles in among photographs and books. Inside, the box keeps rings, earrings, a favourite brooch or a few keepsakes safe and close at hand, so the piece earns its place twice over, as an ornament and as storage. The natural colouring suits rooms with a country feel, warm wood and woollen throws, yet he looks as good on pale marble or a modern shelf. He makes a thoughtful gift that will be kept and used.
The opening runs across the middle of the stag: the upper half, with his head and antlers, lifts on a hinge at the back to reveal a cream interior, then closes down so the gold-coloured rim meets neatly. Each one is painted by hand, which gives the fur its natural look. To care for him, dust with a soft dry cloth, keep him away from water and handle the antlers gently, as they are the finest part. Tuck a pair of earrings inside before you wrap it, and the gift becomes two in one.
