Description

A vase in recycled glass, 23cm tall and 15cm across, with straight sides, rounded shoulders top and bottom and a short neck that flares into a rolled rim. The surface is silvered: a mercury finish that has broken up as it went on, so a pale silver cream ground runs through with vertical streaks of rust brown and ochre and patches of grey. The finish is crusted rather than smooth, and it covers the glass entirely.

The opening measures 6.5cm across, narrow enough to hold a handful of stems upright and wide enough to take branches. At 23cm the vase carries stems cut long or bare branches, and it stands on a sideboard. The finish is opaque rather than clear, so nothing shows through the glass and the water line stays hidden.

The glass is recycled, given a second use rather than thrown away, and the silver finish is applied to the surface afterwards, which is where the mottling comes from. No two vases come out alike: the streaks fall differently, the balance of silver against rust changes, and the same vase reads cooler or warmer depending on the light on it. Indoor use only.
