Description

A side table, 43cm tall, in wood. Overhang decides how it feels to sit or stand at: a top flush with the frame reads neat and gives you nowhere to put your knees, and a little overhang does the opposite. At 41cm wide it is about the width of a laptop. A side table is judged on height before looks: too low and a mug is a reach, too high and it crowds the arm of the chair. This one sits in the range that suits most sofas and armchairs.

A natural, unpainted finish shows the material doing its own work — the grain, the weave or the fibre is the decoration, and no two pieces are identical because no two lengths of the raw material are. A veneered surface gives the look of the timber without its weight or its appetite for humidity. It is not solid wood and does not behave like it — a deep scratch goes through to the board rather than sanding out.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with. Bought as a pair they read as deliberate rather than repetitive, and at this width two sit either side of a bed without taking the table over.

The useful test is the top rather than the footprint: a table that is wide enough for a lamp, a book and a mug at once is doing its job, and one that only holds a mug will get moved within a month.
