Description

These are four small stoneware plates in beige, each 13cm across and 1.5cm tall, with a crab at the centre of every one. The crab has a glossy glaze that settles deeper in its shell and claws, so the detail stands out clearly against the speckled, sandy surface. At 13cm across they are side plates rather than dinner plates: right for a slice of bread, a piece of cake, a few olives or a small helping of something to share. The rims are gently uneven, so each plate has a soft, irregular outline rather than a machined circle.

They suit a seafood supper, a summer table outdoors or a kitchen shelf with a coastal feel. Put one beside each dinner plate for bread and butter, or bring all four out for starters, tapas and desserts when friends visit. At only 1.5cm tall they are shallow plates with a low lip, better for dry bites, cheese and cake than for anything saucy. The crab motif also makes them an easy gift for anyone who lives by the sea or loves a crab sandwich.

Each plate is made from 100% stoneware and finished in a reactive glaze with an overlaying glass component. A reactive glaze responds to the heat of the kiln, so the speckling and shading vary from piece to piece and no two plates come out quite alike. The plates are suitable for food and go straight in the dishwasher. Oven and microwave use is not recommended, because of the glass component in the glaze. The styling props shown are not included. For styling, lay them on a larger plain plate so the crabs take centre stage, or stack all four on an open shelf between meals.
