Description

Hadden is a set of four stoneware plates, each 13cm across and 1.5cm tall, with a lobster motif at the centre of a cream glaze. At that size they are small plates rather than dinner plates, just right for a slice of buttered toast, a scone with jam, or a few olives and a wedge of cheese. The rim rises gently and runs in a soft, uneven wave, so each plate looks a little irregular rather than perfectly round, and the speckled glaze gives the surface a quiet, grainy depth around the motif.

We like them beside the dinner plates for bread at a seafood supper, or brought out with crab sandwiches and a pot of tea on a summer afternoon. They suit a kitchen or dining room with a coastal leaning, a holiday cottage, or anyone who likes a little humour at the table; a lobster is hard to take too seriously. Four is a good number for a small lunch party, and the plates work just as well for a modest pudding, a few petits fours or a pat of butter. The plates are 100% stoneware, a dense, hard-fired material that stands up well to everyday use. The finish is a reactive glaze with an overlaying glass component; reactive glazes move as they are fired, so each plate varies a little in tone and speckle, and no two are quite alike. They go in the dishwasher, but because of the glass in the glaze they are not for the oven or the microwave, so warm food on another dish and plate it up afterwards.
