Description

Gong is a pair of small chopping boards in rubberwood, each cut to a soft, pebble-like outline with one end fuller than the other and a gentle inward curve along one side. Each board is 23.5cm long, 16.5cm wide and 1.5cm thick, a handy size for the jobs that do not need a big board: halving a lemon, slicing a few tomatoes, chopping herbs or cutting a wedge of cheese. The wood keeps its natural colour with the grain on full show, and because no two pieces of timber grow alike, the pattern runs differently across each board in the pair.

These boards work as hard at the table as they do by the hob. Keep one beside the chopping knives for quick prep and use the other for serving, or bring both out together with bread, cheese, fruit or a few nibbles when friends come round for drinks. Two boards also mean two people can chop side by side while a meal comes together. At this size they slip easily into a kitchen drawer or lean at the back of a worktop without taking up room, so they suit a small flat kitchen as well as a busy family one, and they travel well in a picnic basket.

The boards are finished with vegetable oil, which brings out the grain and leaves the wood with a soft, smooth feel under the hand. They do not go in the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so wash them by hand in warm soapy water and dry them with a tea towel straight away; wood does best when it is not left to soak.
