Description

A coffee table, 41cm tall, in white. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 120cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. Aim for roughly two thirds the length of the sofa, and the same height as the seat cushion or slightly below.

A cool colour recedes: it makes a piece read as further away and a room as larger, which is why cool tones suit small spaces better than their reputation for coldness suggests. Acacia is dense, oily and naturally water-resistant, which is why it turns up on chopping boards and garden furniture alike. The grain is strongly figured, so no two boards read the same. 2 shelves. 2 drawers.

Everything loosens with use. A yearly check of the fixings takes a minute and is the difference between a piece that stays square and one that develops a lean it never loses. Decide about storage before looks: a shelf or a drawer is what stops the top becoming the place everything lands. Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
