Description

These are a pair of ceramic salt and pepper shakers made as two little gingerbread houses, each with a pitched roof of scalloped tiles, arched windows, a little door and icing-style trim along the eaves and the base. The two houses are not identical: one has its door at the gable end, the other beside a window along its side, so they look like neighbours on the table rather than twins. They are made from dolomite ceramic, a dense, opaque ceramic body that holds fine raised detail well, and they come in brown. Each house is 6cm long, 4.5cm wide and 6cm tall, with a capacity of 25ml: a small, tidy shaker for the table rather than a kitchen store.

They are made for the table at Christmas. Put them out beside the plates for a family lunch, a run of December dinners or a festive brunch, where they are easy to pass along and small enough to sit between glasses without crowding anything. The holes sit in the roof, so you simply tip the house over your plate to season. Because they look as much like a decoration as a piece of tableware, they also sit happily on a kitchen shelf or dresser between meals, and they make a cheerful small present for whoever hosts Christmas each year.

On care, the maker is clear: these shakers do not go in the dishwasher, the microwave or the oven, so wash them by hand. Their 25ml capacity means a modest fill, which suits shakers that come out mainly for the Christmas table and spend the rest of the year on a shelf. As a practical styling note, set them on a plain linen or hessian runner, where the brown and the icing-style trim stand out, with simple plates around them so the two little houses stay the centre of attention.

Frequently Asked

What are the salt and pepper shakers made of?

They are made from 100% dolomite ceramic, a dense, opaque ceramic body, and they come in brown with icing-style trim on the roofs and walls.

Can the shakers go in the dishwasher?

No. They are not suitable for the dishwasher, and they should not go in the microwave or the oven either, so wash them by hand.

How big are the shakers and how much do they hold?

Each house is 6cm long, 4.5cm wide and 6cm tall, with a capacity of 25ml, which keeps them small enough to sit neatly between plates and glasses.

How many shakers do I get?

You get two shakers, one for salt and one for pepper, each made as a little gingerbread house with its own arrangement of windows and door.

Are the two shakers the same design?

No. Both are gingerbread houses with scalloped roof tiles and icing-style trim, but one has its door at the gable end and the other has its door along the side beside a window.

Can I use them as a decoration as well?

Yes. They are made to hold salt and pepper at the table, and between meals the two little houses sit well on a kitchen shelf or dresser as a small Christmas decoration.
