Description

Four rectangular placemats, each 46 by 35cm, woven by hand from seagrass and cotton. A dark cotton warp crosses pale natural seagrass, so the surface reads as a close grid rather than a flat colour and moves between brown and grey as the light changes. Two opposite edges finish in a row of looped seagrass knots that stand proud of the weave, and the other two are bound in the darker yarn.

At 46 by 35cm a mat takes a dinner plate with room round it for cutlery and a glass, and the weave is thick enough at 1cm to lift a plate clear of the table rather than laying it flat on the wood. Four of them will lay a table for four, and the looped edges mean each one sits with a soft outline rather than a cut one. Gatita also runs to a table runner in the same mocha.

The fibres are seagrass and cotton, interlaced by hand using traditional techniques to make a surface that will stand daily use. Seagrass is a natural fibre, so the tone and the texture shift gently from one mat to the next and along the length of a single one. Four mats come in a set.
