Description

This candle holder takes the form of a flat fish, made of iron and given an electroplated finish in brass. It measures 15cm long, 11cm wide and 4cm tall, so it sits low and compact on any surface. The body forms a shallow tray with a gently raised edge, while fine lines pick out the fins, the gill and a long ridged tail that reaches out to one side. At the centre stands a single cup with a rolled lip, which holds one candle upright. At 0.13KG it is light enough to lift with one hand.

Because it is low and flat, it suits a coffee table, a side table, a mantelpiece or a windowsill, anywhere a candle should stand short rather than tall. The fish shape gives a gentle nod to the sea, so it sits naturally in a coastal scheme or a room full of linen, rattan and stoneware. It makes a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves the seaside, and a quiet touch on a summer table laid for guests. Use one alone on a stack of books, or place a few along a dining table for a relaxed evening with friends.

It is 100% iron, a dense and hard-wearing metal, and the brass tone comes from an electroplated finish, a process that lays a thin coat of metal over the surface. Look closely and the finish shows a soft, slightly uneven sheen, which gives the piece a worn, found-object feel rather than a high polish. The styling props shown are not included, so choose a slim candle in a soft, pale shade; it looks well against rattan, washed linen or a patterned book cover, and setting it slightly off centre on a side table lets the long tail show to best effect.
