Description

The Eveready FSU is a fluorescent tube starter rated for lamps between 4W and 65W on 220-240V mains. Each starter houses a small glow-discharge tube and bimetallic contacts that close briefly when voltage is applied, allowing the ballast to generate the high-voltage pulse needed to ignite the mercury vapour inside the fluorescent tube. An integrated anti-disturbance capacitor suppresses electrical noise during the start sequence.

Designed for residential and commercial fluorescent fittings using T8 and T12 tubes, the starter fits into a standard bayonet socket inside the luminaire body. The start time is greater than four seconds, which allows the electrodes at each end of the tube to preheat before the main arc strikes, reducing electrode wear and extending tube life. Each starter is rated for over 10,000 switching cycles and up to 9,000 ignition activations, making it suitable for spaces where lights are turned on and off frequently.

This pack contains two starters, providing a spare for future replacement or allowing two fittings to be serviced at once. Each starter weighs 20g and sits inside the fitting out of sight once installed. The FSU model works with standard magnetic ballasts in fluorescent luminaires manufactured from the 1980s onwards.

Frequently Asked

How do I know if the starter needs replacing?

If the fluorescent tube flickers repeatedly without fully igniting, or the tube ends glow orange without the main arc striking, the starter has likely reached the end of its cycle life and should be replaced. Always turn off power at the switch before removing the old starter.

Will this work with LED tubes?

No. This starter is designed for traditional fluorescent tubes with magnetic ballasts. Most LED replacement tubes are designed to bypass the starter entirely and require the starter socket to be bridged or left empty. Check the LED tube manufacturer's instructions before installation.

What voltage does it operate on?

The FSU starter operates on 220-240V mains, which is standard for UK and European fluorescent installations. It will not work on 110V systems.

How is the starter fitted?

The starter has a two-pin base that pushes into a bayonet socket inside the fluorescent fitting. Push the starter in and rotate approximately 90 degrees clockwise until it locks. To remove, rotate anticlockwise and pull out. Always isolate power before fitting or removing.
