Description

A coffee table, 45cm tall, in natural. The top is what the piece is judged on, because it is the part at eye level and the part everything is put down on. A frame can be repaired; a marked top is lived with. At 112cm wide it is wider than a standard interior door. Aim for roughly two thirds the length of the sofa, and the same height as the seat cushion or slightly below.

A natural, unpainted finish shows the material doing its own work — the grain, the weave or the fibre is the decoration, and no two pieces are identical because no two lengths of the raw material are. Cast and wrought iron are heavy by nature, and that weight is doing a job: it keeps the piece where it is put rather than shifting every time something brushes past. Iron also holds a hand-worked line that a machine-pressed metal cannot. It is dense enough to take a sharp edge and a fine turning, which is why mango pieces can be detailed in a way softwood cannot.

Furniture fails at the joints and the runners long before the surface wears out, which is why the way a piece is put together matters more than what it is finished with.

Decide about storage before looks: a shelf or a drawer is what stops the top becoming the place everything lands.

Dusting is all it asks for, with a damp cloth on the finish and nothing solvent or abrasive.
