Description

This yellow stoneware mug carries a little embossed duck and the words 'you are SO LOVELY', a cheerful lift for the first cup of the day. The duck stands out in raised relief on the front, glazed in soft white with an orange beak and feet and a rosy cheek, so you can feel it under your fingers as well as see it. Beneath it, the message is printed in dark grey, with 'you are' in a loose handwritten script and 'SO LOVELY' in neat capitals. The body is a warm, glossy yellow with a white inside, finished with a chunky looped handle and a gently flared foot. It stands 8.5cm tall, 11.5cm wide and 8.5cm deep, an everyday size that sits comfortably in the hand.

It is a mug for the kitchen shelf, the desk at work or the bedside table, ready for tea, coffee or hot chocolate whenever the day needs brightening. The sunny yellow lifts a row of plainer mugs on a dresser or open shelving, and it sits happily beside white, cream and natural wood. Because the words do the talking, it also makes an easy gift: a quiet way to tell someone what you think of them, handed over with a packet of their favourite tea or simply left on their desk to be found.

Stoneware is a dense ceramic, and the glossy glaze keeps the yellow bright and the surface smooth to the touch. As general good practice for glazed stoneware, we suggest washing it by hand in warm soapy water and drying it with a soft cloth. The looped handle is generous enough to hang from a mug hook or mug tree, which keeps that cheerful duck on show between brews. For giving, wrap it in tissue with a handwritten card that says the same thing the mug does.
