Description

This small stoneware vase has a face. A sculpted face with closed eyes, a long nose and a gentle smile sits just beneath the rim, and below it the body draws in to a narrow waist before widening again, so the whole piece looks like a little standing figure. Around the lower half runs a raised pattern of crosses, dots and short bars, deep enough to feel under your fingertips. It is made entirely of stoneware in green and stands 14.5cm tall and 6cm across, a size that suits even a narrow shelf.

At this size it is a vase for a few stems rather than a bouquet: a couple of garden flowers, a sprig of blossom or a handful of dried grasses is all it needs. It sits comfortably on a bookshelf, a sideboard or a small tray on a side table, and it is just as at home on a bedside table or the corner of a desk, where the face keeps you quiet company. Because it looks good empty as well as filled, it also works as a small sculpture between seasons. It makes a cheerful gift for anyone who likes ceramics with a bit of character.
