Description

A board of mango wood, 43cm long, 31cm wide and 1.7cm thick, with a short handle cut into one end and a leather loop through it. The edges are left slightly irregular rather than trued, and the saw texture stays visible across the face. It is built as a panel, strips glued side by side with the grain alternated between them, so the patterning runs in bands and changes direction from one to the next.

Forty-three centimetres by thirty-one takes a loaf, a wedge of cheese and the knife at the same time. The loop means it hangs on a hook between meals rather than going into a drawer. It is food safe, and at 1.08kg it carries from kitchen to table in one hand.

The wood is mango, a by-product of mango farming. The trees are grown for fruit and harvested for years, and only once they stop bearing are they cut, which gives the growers a second income from what would be waste. A larger Embe board is 58cm by 38cm.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

Is it food safe?

Yes.

Is it one piece of wood?

No. It is a panel of strips glued side by side with the grain alternated.

Is there a larger size?

Yes, 58cm by 38cm.
