Description

The large Embe is 58cm long and 38cm wide at 1.7cm thick, fifteen centimetres longer and seven wider than the medium. The same short handle is cut into one end with a leather loop through it, and the same irregular edge is left rather than trued. It is a glued panel, strips laid side by side with the grain alternated between them.

Fifty-eight centimetres runs down the middle of a table rather than sitting at one end of it, and at that length it takes a full spread at once: bread, three cheeses, the pickles and the knives. At 1.72kg it is a two-hand lift once it is loaded. It is food safe.

The wood is mango, cut from trees felled once they have stopped bearing fruit, which turns what would be waste into a second income for the growers. The grain direction changes from strip to strip, so the patterning is never the same on two boards. A 43cm by 31cm Embe board is made as well.

Frequently Asked

How big is it?

58cm by 38cm, and 1.7cm thick.

Is it food safe?

Yes.

Is it one piece of wood?

No. It is a panel of strips glued side by side with the grain alternated.

Is there a smaller size?

Yes, 43cm by 31cm.

How should I wash it?

In warm soapy water, rinsed and dried straight away. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface nourishes the wood, and will darken the tone.
