Description

The Embaata is a tapered drum in natural linen, lined pale on the inside and stitched over an iron frame. The linen is undyed and evenly woven, a soft greige with the slub of the flax visible up close but no pattern or texture beyond it. This is the small size: 14.5cm tall and 20cm across.

At 20cm across this suits a small base, a bedside lamp or a squat body, and it is the size that keeps a shade from overhanging a narrow table. Linen this plain does not compete with a base, which is the reason to choose it over a woven jute or a coloured velvet: whatever the lamp is made of stays the thing you look at. The lining reflects light back down rather than letting it pass out through the weave, so a small Embaata puts light on a surface rather than only glowing.
