Description

The Embaata is a tapered drum in natural linen, lined pale on the inside and stitched over an iron frame. The linen is undyed and evenly woven, a soft greige with the slub of the flax visible up close but no pattern beyond it, and the seam runs as a single vertical line. This is the medium: 18.5cm tall and 30.5cm across.

Thirty centimetres is the width most ordinary table lamps are built around, so the medium is the size that fits a lamp already in the room without overhanging a bedside or a side table. Linen this plain leaves the base to do the work, which is the reason to choose it over a woven jute or a coloured velvet. The lining sends light down onto the surface rather than letting it pass out through the weave in every direction, so it lights a table as well as glowing on it. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.39kg.

Linen is one of the oldest woven fibres, hard wearing and recyclable. It is stitched around the frame by hand, so the seam falls in its own place and the tension varies slightly between shades.
