Description

The Embaata is a tapered drum in natural linen, lined pale on the inside and stitched over an iron frame. The linen is undyed and evenly woven, a soft greige with the slub of the flax visible up close. This is the large: 21.5cm tall and 40.5cm across, so the taper is gentler than on the smaller sizes and the shade reads as a broad pale band.

Forty centimetres is floor lamp width. On an ordinary side table this size overhangs the surface; on a floor lamp base over a metre tall it is in proportion with the column, and the extra width spreads the light across a wider area below. At 21.5cm deep it hides the lampholder from a seated eye. Because the linen is plain and pale it does not darken a corner the way a dyed shade does, which matters when a floor lamp is the only light in one. It fits a table lamp, a floor lamp or a ceiling pendant. It weighs 0.53kg.

Linen is one of the oldest woven fibres, hard wearing and recyclable. It is stitched around the frame by hand, so the seam falls in its own place and the tension varies slightly between shades. The Embaata range runs from small through medium and this large to extra large. No bulb, base or fitting is included.
