Eisha Small Mango Wood Serving Bowl - Brown

The Eisha is a small serving bowl in mango wood, 14cm across and 8.2cm high. The wood is finished in a rich dark stain, and a band of long fluted gouges is cut by hand round the outside of the bowl, running from just under the rim to about halfway down the wall. Each cut goes through the stain to the lighter wood below it, so the band reads two tone against the plain wall around it. The grain varies naturally under the stain, so the depth of the colour shifts across every bowl.

At 14cm across this is a bowl for one thing rather than for a whole course: nuts, olives, crisps or a dip. Several set together on a board or a counter make up a spread for before dinner, and one on its own sits out on a countertop. It is foodsafe.

The wood is mango, a by-product of the mango growing industry in India: once the trees stop fruiting they are taken down and the timber is used again. The band of gouges is cut by hand using traditional methods, so no two bowls carry the same run of marks. The Eisha range also holds a wide shallow serving bowl, a cake stand and a set of coasters.

How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away. The colour will shift over time, which is the wood itself. Rub an edible oil such as olive or walnut into the surface with a dry cloth to feed and protect it.
