Eisha Shallow Mango Wood Serving Bowl - Brown

The Eisha is a shallow serving bowl in mango wood, 35cm across and only 5.5cm high. The wood is stained a dark brown that follows the grain, so the tone shifts across the piece rather than covering it. A band of short vertical cuts runs round the outside of the bowl just below the rim, carved by hand, and the cutting goes through the stain into the paler wood underneath, so the band reads two tone against the dark wall.

At 35cm across and 5.5cm high this is a wide bowl rather than a deep one, so a salad, fruit or a sharing dish sits spread out in it rather than piled up. The width takes the middle of a dining table, and on a kitchen counter or a sideboard it works as somewhere to keep fruit out. It is foodsafe.

The wood is mango, a by-product of the mango growing industry in India: trees that have stopped fruiting are taken down and the timber is worked into homeware. The grain varies naturally under the stain, so no two bowls carry the same figure, and the band of cuts round the outside is done by hand with traditional methods. How do I look after it?

Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse it and dry it straight away. The colour will shift over time, which is the wood itself. An edible oil such as olive or walnut rubbed into the surface with a dry cloth will feed and protect it.
