Description
Edward is a wooden advent calendar made in the shape of a red double-decker bus, and it comes with a light. Its small drawers are numbered 1 to 24 across both decks, each with a round wooden knob to pull, so there is one to open every day from the first of December to Christmas Eve. The bus is cut from plywood and painted with the details that make it fun to look at: Father Christmas at the wheel in the driver's window, Merry Christmas lettered along the side, a wreath on the last drawer, holly on another, a row of stars and a snowy trim over the wheel arches and along the base. It measures 37cm long, 11.5cm wide and 21cm tall.
At 11.5cm wide it needs only a narrow strip of windowsill, mantelpiece, bookshelf or sideboard, and its long shape reads well from across a room. The drawers are made for the small surprises of the countdown: a folded note, a tiny decoration, a little trinket or a clue to a bigger present tucked away somewhere else. It suits a household that likes a shared moment each morning in December, a couple filling it for one another, or anyone who would rather have a calendar to bring out and refill year after year.
The body is plywood with a painted red finish, set off by the plain wood of the drawer fronts, where the numbers are marked clearly. At 0.828KG it is easy to lift down and move to another room as the decorations change. The maker's assembly instructions come as a PDF download. For styling, give it a little space either side so the bus outline stays clear, then add a sprig of pine or a couple of small trees nearby to make a Christmas scene in the window.
